Wall Street Bull

The bronze sculpture officially titled “Charging Bull” is today one of New York City’s most popular attractions. Although it’s widely known as the “Wall Street Bull,” the statue is not actually located on Wall Street. In fact, it stood there for only one single day after it first appeared on the city’s streets.

Another surprising fact is that the Wall Street Bull does not belong to the City of New York. It remains a privately owned sculpture. Its creation was not commissioned by the city — it was a personal initiative by the sculptor Arturo Di Modica, who cast the massive work in bronze and, without prior permission from city authorities, installed it in front of the New York Stock Exchange on December 15, 1989.

That day, passersby stopped to admire the sculpture while Di Modica handed out flyers explaining his work. The leaflet stated that the full title was “Charging Bull” and that it symbolized the strength, speed, and even aggressive growth of the American stock market and the nation’s economy.

By that evening, the sculpture was removed by city police, lifted by crane onto a truck, and taken away as an unauthorized installation. However, thousands of people who had seen it that first day and were impressed by its power and beauty appealed to city officials to return the bull to public view. Senior executives from the New York Stock Exchange also supported the request, noting that the sculpture represented economic strength and prosperity.

City authorities responded to public demand and decided to reinstall the sculpture at its current location in Bowling Green Park. Since then, the Wall Street Bull has remained one of the most photographed and recognizable landmarks in New York City.
