High Line Park is a linear park in Manhattan, built on the elevated structure of a former freight railway that runs above the streets of the city’s West Side. The elevated rail line was constructed in the 1930s to improve safety in the area, where trains had previously run directly through the streets, posing a serious danger to pedestrians.
The railway was used to deliver goods to warehouses and factories located along its route. Trains ran directly through buildings, unloading cargo inside industrial spaces. With the rise of truck transportation and changes in logistics in the second half of the 20th century, the rail line gradually lost its importance, and by the 1980s, all train traffic had completely ceased.
For many years after its closure, the structure remained abandoned. Plans for its demolition were discussed for decades, but in the late 1990s, local residents and activists pushed to preserve it and transform it into a new public space — an elevated pedestrian walkway running above the city, which became known as High Line Park.
The project began in the 2000s, and the first section of High Line Park opened in 2009. During the reconstruction, key elements of the original railway infrastructure were preserved — tracks, steel structures, and other industrial details. The park was integrated into the urban fabric of several neighborhoods, running through them and connecting them with a continuous pedestrian route.
Today, High Line Park is considered one of the most successful examples of transforming industrial infrastructure into a modern urban public space. It also demonstrates how a single infrastructure project can significantly influence the development of surrounding neighborhoods.
High Line Park became a catalyst for urban transformation along its entire route. Walking the park today, you can see works by some of the world’s most renowned architects, including Thomas Heatherwick, Zaha Hadid, Frank Gehry, and Jean Nouvel.
