Stonewall Inn

Stonewall Inn is a historic bar in Greenwich Village that became a symbol of the fight for LGBTQ rights. The building dates back to the 19th century and was originally used as a restaurant and club. In the 1960s, it came under mafia control and was turned into a bar for a gay audience — at the time, such places operated semi-legally and were regularly targeted by police raids.

The key moment in the history of Stonewall Inn happened on the night of June 28, 1969, when one of police raid sparked resistance from visitors. Unlike before, people refused to comply and began to protest. These clashes became known as the Stonewall riots and lasted for several days, drawing public and media attention.

It was after these events that the first organized LGBTQ movements began to form in the United States. A year later, the first march took place in New York on Christopher Street — where Stonewall Inn is located — becoming the prototype for modern LGBTQ Prides.

In the decades that followed, the bar changed ownership several times, but its historical importance only grew. In 1999, Stonewall Inn was added to the National Register of Historic Places. Today, it is far more than just another nightlife spot — it stands as a symbol of the beginning of the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Stonewall Inn is the place where a local conflict turned into a global event — one that changed public perception and set in motion changes that impacted the rights of millions of people around the world.
