The New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is the largest and most influential stock exchange in the world. Located in the heart of Manhattan’s Financial District on Wall Street, it stands today as a symbol of American capitalism and the global economy.
The New York Stock Exchange history began in 1792, when 24 brokers signed the Buttonwood Agreement under a sycamore tree on Wall Street. In that agreement, they committed to trading securities among themselves — an event that marked the beginning of what would become the world’s largest stock exchange.
The current New York Stock Exchange building opened in 1903. It is known for its grand neoclassical façade with massive columns. For many years, trading took place right behind those columns on the main trading floor: brokers took orders by phone and shouted them out while waiting for execution.
Today, most transactions on New York Stock Exchange today are conducted electronically, but the historic trading floor still operates and continues to mark the opening and closing of each trading day with the symbolic ringing of the bell inside the building.
Throughout its history, the New York Stock Exchange has witnessed pivotal moments in global finance: the crash of 1929 that led to the Great Depression, the dot-com crash of 2000, and the events of September 11, 2001, when the exchange was evacuated and, for the only time in its history, suspended trading for nearly a week.
The New York Stock Exchange lists shares of the world’s largest and most recognizable companies. The combined market capitalization of its listed firms exceeds $28 trillion, roughly ten times larger than that of its closest competitor, the London Stock Exchange.
