Washington Square is one of the most recognizable and cozy spots in Greenwich Village, perfectly capturing the unique atmosphere of this low-rise, almost un-Manhattan-like neighborhood. The park’s main landmarks are its fountain — which becomes the central gathering point for young people during the summer — and the iconic triumphal arch, built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of George Washington’s inauguration as the first President of the United States. It is from this very arch that one of New York City’s main streets — Fifth Avenue — begins and stretches north.
Washington Square sits right in the heart of the large campus of one of the city’s most prestigious universities — NYU (New York University). The park is surrounded on all sides by academic buildings and student residences, which directly shapes its distinctive atmosphere. This is especially noticeable in the summer months, when an incredible amount of activity is packed into a relatively small space.
At any given time, you’ll find several music bands performing in different parts of the park, carefully spaced so they don’t interfere with each other. Chess players sit at the tables, inviting passersby to challenge them to a game. Artists with easels, alternative crowds, students meeting after classes, people lounging on the grass or sitting on countless benches — all of them together create this unique, high-concentration atmosphere you simply won’t find anywhere else in Manhattan.
