Jefferson Market Library

Jefferson Market Library is one of the most unusual libraries in New York, located in the West Village on the site of a former courthouse complex. The building was constructed in 1877 in the Gothic Revival style by architects Frederick Clarke Withers and Calvert Vaux. Originally, it housed a courthouse, along with a police station and a jail, forming a single judicial complex.

By the late 19th century, the Jefferson Market Courthouse was one of the busiest courts in the city. Both minor offenses and high-profile cases were heard here. One of the most notable cases involved writer O. Henry, who was convicted of financial fraud and later served time in the jail located directly on the premises.

By the early 20th century, the importance of the courthouse declined, and by the 1940s, the building faced demolition. At that point, local residents and members of the cultural community launched a campaign to save it. A key role was played by Eleanor Roosevelt, who supported the effort to preserve the historic structure and transform it into a public space.

In 1967, the former courthouse officially reopened as the Jefferson Market Library. The building’s architectural character remained largely unchanged — interior features such as high ceilings, stained glass windows, and the original layout were preserved, reflecting its past as a civic institution. The Jefferson Market Library stands as a strong example of how a historic building can be successfully adapted without losing its identity.

Today, Jefferson Market Library is not only an active public library but also an important historic landmark of the West Village. The building is officially recognized as an architectural landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
