Hudson River Park

Hudson River Park is the largest waterfront park in Manhattan, stretching along the island’s western shoreline from Battery Park to 59th Street in Midtown. The park occupies former port and industrial zones that, throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, served as the core of New York’s cargo and passenger shipping industry. Dozens of piers once lined the waterfront, handling both industrial vessels and transatlantic passenger lines.

One of the key facilities in this area was the Chelsea Piers complex, opened in 1910 as a modern passenger terminal. For decades, Manhattan’s west side remained a major transportation hub, but with the rise of container shipping and the construction of new cargo terminals in the mid-20th century, port activity on Manhattan began to decline.

As a result, by the 1970s and 1980s, most of the piers had been abandoned. This prompted city authorities to begin discussions about the future of these waterfront areas. Leading urban planners and local residents were involved in the process. In 1998, the Hudson River Park Trust was established — an organization responsible for funding, development, and management of the new park.

Hudson River Park was developed in phases over several decades. Former piers were gradually reconstructed and repurposed into public spaces, including sports facilities, recreational areas, cultural venues and bike lines. The project involved both public and private investment.

Ultimately, the creation of the park became one of the largest redevelopment projects aimed at transforming New York’s urban infrastructure. Today, Hudson River Park is not just a recreational space, but a clear example of large-scale transformation of industrial land into a modern public environment.

The park includes bike paths, pedestrian routes, restored historic piers, and new architectural landmarks such as Little Island. Its development fully reflects New York’s transition from an industrial port city to a modern urban environment focused on quality of life.
