On September 11, 2001, the original Twin Towers were destroyed in a terrorist attack that changed New York forever. Rising from that tragedy is One World Trade Center — a powerful symbol of the city’s resilience and a bold new chapter for New York City.
Construction began in 2006, and the building was completed and welcomed its first tenants in 2014. One World Trade Center stands at a symbolic height of 1,776 feet — a direct reference to the year the Declaration of Independence was signed. That’s why many New Yorkers still call it the “Freedom Tower.”
Today, One WTC is the tallest building in the United States and the entire Western Hemisphere. It features a super-reinforced concrete core built for maximum strength and security. The base starts as a massive cube and gradually transforms into eight glass triangles, creating that sleek, faceted crystal look. At the top, a 408-foot spire crowns the tower — and it’s not just decorative; it functions as a broadcast antenna.
The building was designed by architect David Childs of Skidmore, Owings & Merrill — the same architecture firm behind the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. So yes, you could say One WTC and Burj Khalifa are architectural “relatives.” Same firm, same drive to push engineering limits — just completely different stories and symbolism behind them.
On floors 100 to 102, you’ll find the One World Observatory, offering unreal 360° views of New York. On a clear day, you can see up to 50 miles in every direction.
